Fish Oil Lowers Risk of Macular Degeneration

A meta-analysis (review) looked at nine studies which enrolled a total of 88,974 people, including 3,203 cases of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). High dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) was associated with a 38% reduction in the risk for late AMD. Eating fish at least twice weekly was associated with a 24% decreased risk for early AMD as well.

Among elderly people, AMD is the leading cause of vision loss. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), 1 of the 2 key oils in fish oil, is an essential part of both retinal and brain tissues.
