Magnesium Prevents Migraines

A number of earlier studies found that magnesium by mouth decreases the frequency of migraine headaches. In fact, intravenous magnesium is the most effective treatment available for eliminating an acute migraine attack. Unfortunately, at a cost of less than 10 cents, no one is telling Emergency Room physicians about this research.

In this study, which looked at those with migraine headaches who do NOT get a warning aura (e.g., flashing lights), 600 mg a day of magnesium citrate was given daily for 3 months. The magnesium group had markedly fewer migraines than the placebo group.

For an overview of how to use the best of natural and prescription therapies to prevent or treat migraines, see A Comprehensive Medicine Approach to Migraines. You'll be glad you did!
