Want to Get Rid of That Spare Tire? Get Happy!

Researchers in England studied nearly 8,000 people aged 50 and older and found that those experiencing the most happiness and pleasure were also the healthiest — including having a trimmer waistline!

The remarkable new research was published in the June, 2012 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine (the study of how emotions, thoughts and attitudes affect the body). The study found that men and women who experienced more happiness and pleasure had more optimal levels of triglycerides (a blood fat) and more optimal lung function.

The happier men also had trimmer waistlines. And the happier women had more balanced immune systems (meaning they were less likely to fall prey to chronic disease) and higher levels of good HDL cholesterol.

"Positive psychological well-being has biological correlates that may be health protective," concluded the researchers.
