Treating Stubborn Thyroid Problems

What's New in S.H.I.N.E. — Part 7

Dear Readers,

This week continues my multi-part series on "What's New in the SHINE protocol." Today I'll discuss hormones — the "H" in SHINE — with a focus on underactive thyroid function, or hypothyroidism.

Physicians too often make the mistake of treating a patient's test results instead of treating the actual patient. Because of that, they're unwilling to prescribe them the thyroid hormone they need. Fortunately there are two natural options that can be very helpful — and neither requires a prescription!

These can be taken together and can help you even if you're already on a prescription thyroid hormone.

Who Is Writing the Medical "Standard of Practice Guidelines"? Prepare to Be Shocked (But Not Really)

Ever wonder where the medical guidelines that physicians use come from? One would hope that they would be based predominantly on the public's best interest, and on science.

But they're not.

Very often (especially when a lot of money rides on the outcome) the guidelines come from committees of groups such as the American Heart Association or the American College of Cardiology. And a recent study in the British Medical Journal showed that over half of the experts serving on these committees had a conflict of interest — meaning that they were on the payroll of the drug companies!

Iodine is one of the most important minerals required for healthy cellular and complete metabolic function. There is no life without it. Yet so many people are iodine-deficient.

Iodine supports healthy thyroid function, which is critical for:

  • Energy
  • Weight loss
  • Preventing muscle pain, and
  • Optimizing brain function

Iodine is also critical for breast health, and I routinely recommend 6.25-12.5 mg for those with breast cysts, breast tenderness or even breast cancer. Why breast issues? Iodine is critical for healthy breast function, and these symptoms are often simply a marker for iodine deficiency, and breast tissues of women with breast cancer show low iodine levels. All of this makes more sense when we look at research showing that Japanese women — many of whom eat 12.5 mgs of iodine daily because of their traditional high-seaweed diet — are a shocking 2/3 less likely than American women to get breast cancer! Could iodine be an important missing link to good health? According to many holistic physicians, the answer is yes.

If you are unable to find a physician who will write a prescription thyroid hormone, there are other alternatives. For many people, special natural thyroid glandular supplements can be very helpful. I recommend BMR Complex by Integrative Therapeutics.

This Week's Joke

More Wisdom From Little Larry

Larry watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.

"Why do you do that, mommy?" he asked.

"To make myself beautiful," said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.

"What's the matter," asked Larry, "Giving up?"
