Healthy Thyroid, Healthy You
Optimizing Your Health Part 4: Optimizing Thyroid Function
This week we're going to talk about optimizing your thyroid gland, a very important endocrine (hormone-producing) organ located in the front of your neck.
The thyroid gland pumps out two key hormones: T3 (triiodothyronine, the active form), and T4 (thyroxine, the inactive storage form). Those hormones affect virtually EVERY system in your body, determining how fast or how slow it goes. Think of the thyroid gland as the body's gas pedal.
When your thyroid gland is working optimally, it's likely that…
- Your weight is normal (because your metabolism is humming along, burning calories at a good clip).
- Your bowel movements are regular (because your digestion isn't slow and sluggish).
- Your body temperature is "just right" (cold hands and feet are a common problem in folks whose thyroid function isn't optimal).
- Your thinking is clear and concentrated (rather than foggy and wandering) and your memory is sharp.
- Your energy levels are constant, with daytime fatigue a rarity.
- You sleep well.
- Your feel happy and positive most of the time.
- Your skin is healthy (not too dry) and (if you're a woman) your hair isn't thinning unnaturally.
- Your muscles feel relaxed and comfortable.
But it's likely that as many as 50 million Americans suffer from thyroid function that is NOT optimal. Possible causes for this are wide-ranging, and include environmental pollution, unrelenting stress, and nutritional deficiencies.
Unfortunately, standard thyroid tests more often than not miss a thyroid that is not functioning optimally.
For one thing, most primary care physicians don't even think to do the right tests for thyroid function when dealing with common health. Basically, the TSH test for thyroid function is very unreliable, failing to spot the large majority of people with less than optimal function that would benefit from thyroid support.
What can you do to make sure your thyroid is functioning optimally? Plenty!
Love & blessings,
In late June, members of the Endocrine Society met in Houston for their 94th annual meeting — which included the presentation of several new studies about optimal thyroid function…
Optimal Thyroid, Stronger Circulatory System
Researchers from Finland found that folks with optimal thyroid function were 17% more likely to have optimal heart and circulatory health. A thyroid gland that's not optimal, said the researchers, "has long-lasting effects on the patient's heart and blood vessels."
In a similar study, in the May 2012 issue of the Journal of Rheumatology, researchers from the Mayo Clinic reported that women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and sub-optimal thyroid function were more likely to develop heart concerns compared to women with RA and normal thyroid function.
Optimal Thyroid, Healthier Pregnancy
In a study of 1,000 pregnant women, researchers from India found that those with optimal thyroid function had much healthier pregnancies: fewer miscarriages, fewer stillbirths, less premature labor, and fewer cases of low birth weight of the baby. "All pregnant women should be screened for thyroid dysfunction within the first three months of getting pregnant," said the study's lead author. This includes not only a TSH level, but also a Free T4 and, especially critical, an anti-TPO antibody.
Featured This Week
Supports Healthy Thyroid Function
If you are unable to find a physician who will write a prescription thyroid hormone, there are other alternatives. For many people, special natural thyroid glandular supplements can be very helpful. I recommend BMR Complex by Integrative Therapeutics.
Supports Healthy Thyroid and Breast Function
Iodine is one of the most important minerals required for healthy cellular and metabolic function. There is no life without it. Yet, with iodine intakes having dropped by over 50% in the last 50 years, many people need more iodine.
Iodine supports healthy thyroid function, which is critical for:
- Weight loss
- Preventing muscle pain, and
- Optimizing brain function

Sunlighten Infrared Saunas
Infrared saunas have long been an excellent way to help the body clear toxins, while also promoting muscle relaxation and calm. Now new technology has expanded its range of health-enhancing benefits. Here is an excellent example of new full spectrum sauna technology.
This Week's Joke
The cop got out of his car, and the kid who had been stopped for speeding rolled down his window.
"I've been waiting for you all day," the cop said.
The kid replied, "Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could."
When the cop finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket.
