I Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing!
Optimizing Your Health, Part 5: Healthy Digestion (Upper)
Dear Readers,
Stomach got you down? We all love food. But sometimes food doesn't love us! Instead of feeling satisfied after a meal, you feel digestive distress, with symptoms like burning and belching. Maybe you suffer that kind of digestive discomfort every day. Or maybe it's just once in awhile. But it's never fun! And it's not natural.
Mother Nature designed your digestive tract to do its job, effortlessly, efficiently and pleasantly! (Did you ever see a cat or dog salivating over an antacid? They rarely suffer tummy troubles. And if they do, they just take a nap.)
Well, I have good news for when your stomach has the feeling, as they used to say in the old Alka Seltzer commercial, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" So if you feel like you ate a whole cow, when you just had a hamburger, read this week's feature article to learn three easy steps you can take to have optimal, healthy digestion.
Love & blessings,
Dr. T
Research Briefs
Calcium Supplements Threaten the Heart
A study by German researchers published in the June, 2012 issue of the medical journal Heart linked the use of calcium-containing supplements to an 81% increased risk of a heart attack. Calcium supplements "should be taken with caution," concluded the researchers. Fortunately, calcium found in food was actually associated with a lower heart attack risk. Other research has shown that taking vitamin D with calcium also lowers risk, and I recommend magnesium and vitamin K also be included in calcium supplements and antacids.
Antacids and Bowel Infections
Many different bowel infections are common in CFS and fibromyalgia. In a study we conducted more than a decade ago, a whopping 22% of people with CFS/FM tested positive for Clostridium difficile (C. diff) in stool. C. diff is a bacteria that can cause lower GI symptoms ranging from as mild as diarrhea to those that are life-threatening, such as severe inflammation of the colon. Because of that, I now routinely check for C. diff in almost all of my new CFS/FM patients who have diarrhea.
Important: Testing (which any major lab can do properly) requires a loose stool sample that takes the shape of the specimen cup. So you may need to take a Dulcolax tablet to create a loose stool. In addition, if you don't return the sample to the lab within two hours, you have to freeze it.
C. diff is usually caused by antibiotics. But a recent analysis of studies involving more than 300,000 people linked the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Nexium and Prilosec to a 65% increased risk of the infection. You can add this to the long list of health troubles now linked to chronic use of these acid blockers.
