Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) - A Common Cause of CFS & Fibromyalgia

Dear Readers,

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a common trigger for CFS and Fibromyalgia (CFS/FMS). Sleep Apnea is fairly well known. We are now learning about a different form of SDB called "Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)". UARS almost exactly mimics CFS/FMS, is very treatable, and can be picked up on special testing. If you snore at night, you may have UARS or sleep apnea. Tape yourself one night to see. (Don't count on your husband to tell you. Most of us have a better sense of survival than that!) RESEARCH BRIEFS

Lose Weight AND Treat Your CFS & Fibromyalgia

Although ribose (Corvalen) is the single most effective nutrient for increasing energy, and in our Corvalen study increased energy an average of 45%, others nutrients can be helpful as well. We have known for several decades that the nutrient Acetyl-L-Carnitine is low in CFS & Fibromyalgia and this deficiency contributes to both the weight gain (see Losing Weight in CFS and Fibromyalgia) and fatigue. I usually add it to the ribose. Below are a few newer studies on Acetyl-L-Carnitine (must be this form and NOT "L-Carnitine"). The dose to take is 500 mg 2-3x day for at least 4 months. Higher doses are LESS effective. The first study shows that it also helps pain and depression in Fibromyalgia. The second study shows it even helps cancer related fatigue. Pine Bark (Pycnogenol) Naturally Reduces Arthritis Pain

Arthritis affects over 10 million Americans. As natural remedies are more effective than medications (my favorite herbals are "End Pain" or the "Pain Formula"), the over 16,000 US deaths a year from arthritis medications are largely unnecessary. My book, "Pain Free 1-2-3" teaches a 4-step way to eliminate arthritis safely and naturally. Now, a new placebo-controlled study published in the journal Nutrition Research shows that Pycnogenol, an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, improved physical function by 52 percent in patients suffering from arthritis. An Old Heart Medication Shows Promise for Nerve Pain

Neuropathic (nerve) pain can be especially difficult to treat—even more so as most physicians use the wrong medications to treat it and are also not trained in natural therapies. This pain is one where it works best (and very effectively) to combine natural and prescription treatments. How to effectively treat nerve pain is discussed at length in "Pain Free 1-2-3". Nonetheless, we are always on the look out for new treatment tools. Using Flecainide (Tambocor), 30% of patients had an average decrease in pain of over 50%. As an added bonus, it is now available in a less expensive generic. Read more »

QUOTE/JOKE OF THE WEEK

In honor of Christmas, we get to have 2 jokes this week ;-) In honor of CFS/FMS, both will be "Brain Fog Moments!"

Wishing a Happy and healthy New Year to all!!!

Love and Blessings,

Dr. T

Brain Fog Moment #1 is from Gayle:

An elderly couple had their friends over for dinner one evening. While the ladies were clearing the table and getting the desert ready in the kitchen, one of the gentlemen was relating a new discovery to the other man.

"We discovered a new restaurant in town that is just fabulous. The service was great, a wonderful variety of foods to choose from, great ambiance. We really loved it and thought you two would enjoy it."

"What's the name of it?" inquired the friend.

"Oh, let's see. I'm not sure I can remember. Let's see. What is the flower that is red and you give it on Valentine's day and it represents love?" he asked.

The friend replied, "You mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's right," he said. Then he hollered into the kitchen, "Rose, what is the name of that new restaurant we tried the other night?"

Brain Fog Moment #2:

(We don't have the name of the submitter, but I love the e-mail address: Hrt4God@...)

A blonde goes to vacation in Las Vegas. She gets in line at a coke machine. She puts a dollar in, out comes a coke. She puts another dollar in, out comes another coke. She puts yet another dollar in, out comes another coke. As time passes a long line ensues. The man behind her can't take it anymore and asks her if she sees the long line behind her. She replies, "DUHHHHH I'm winning!!!!!!!"
