Healing the Health Care System—Part 1

One of the things that drew me to medicine was the importance of combining both the art and the science of medicine. In the ~ 3 decades since then, most physicians have lost faith in their own ability to diagnose by listening to and examining the patient, and they've seen the average time allotted them per patient visit drop to around 4-7 minutes. Many have also forgotten about "bedside manner" and the ability of words to both harm and heal (to tell someone their condition is hopeless is both a lie and in the olden days was called "putting a curse on someone"). We now think we are relying on science (called "evidence based medicine"), ignoring that science is telling us that it has been hijacked by drug company money and is no longer reliable.

More and more research shows that studies paid for by drug companies (which nowadays are most drug studies) are simply not reliable. Yet, this is what most of medicine is now based on. The cost? Having one of the most expensive health care systems in the world, over 200,000 US deaths from prescriptions yearly, and one of the least effective healthcare systems on the planet.

Understanding what drives medical information (and misinformation) can help you make informed decisions—and could save your life. There is a time for prescriptions and a time for natural therapies. This is an important area. So over the next 3 newsletters, we will include a special series that will help you understand our health care system, how to use it—and how to fix it. Read more »

RESEARCH BRIEFS

Are Medical Guidelines Helpful?

They are to drug companies. Unfortunately the cholesterol, diabetes and other medical society groups' committees that write the medical guidelines are so dominated by doctors on the drugs companies' payroll that the guidelines may do more harm than good. This is supported by a new study which found: "If guidelines are universally ignored, their impact on treatment and outcomes is minimal. Certain patients may be harmed by adherence to specific guidelines." Read more »

Taking Calcium—If You Don't Need It—May Increase Your Risk of Heart Attack

As we've noted for decades, we do not recommend taking calcium supplements unless you have loss of bone density (osteoporosis). This study showed that women in their 70's who took calcium supplements had a 50% increased risk of heart attacks. Avoid this risk by taking other nutrients to balance the calcium, so you can have both strong bones and a healthy heart! Read more »

QUOTE/JOKE OF THE WEEK

Sometimes Truth is Stranger (and Funnier) than Fiction…

Cup of Tea

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me. I was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a get-well gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of 'tea', which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was 'just the cutest thing!' My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up.

Then she says, "Did it ever occur to you that the only place that baby can reach to get water is the toilet?"

Our thanks to Irene for this week's joke. Irene wins a free bottle of Corvalen or the Energy Revitalization System vitamin powder;-) We invite you to send in your favorite jokes or quotes.
