Cats More Effective than Cholesterol Meds for Preventing Heart Disease

Dear Reader,

In this issue of the newsletter, we conclude our 3 part series on Healing the Health Care System (see next section below). To add perspective though, I would like to begin with this recent study which shows that cat owners have 40% less heart attacks and a 30% lower risk of dying from heart disease than non-cat owners. Taking cholesterol medications only decreased heart attacks by 29% (at best) and did not significantly prevent death from heart disease in those without angina or a previous heart attack. This makes cats (and other natural alternatives) much safer, cheaper and more fun than cholesterol lowering medications!

SPECIAL SERIES

Healing the Health Care System—Part 3

[Part 3 of a 3 part series]

Our health care system is on the verge of a financial meltdown. In 2002, the average amount spent by each American for health care was $5,440. This has now increased to over $7,000 per American. Meanwhile, insurance premiums increased by 87 percent between 2000 and 2006—more than four times the growth in wages.

For some of you, the cost of health insurance and uncovered medical costs may be as much as your entire income. Even for the wealthy among us, it can be a major expense. Not only does the cost of health insurance come out of our paycheck (even if your employer pays for it, be assured that it is still coming out of your paycheck!), but it also gets added to the cost of almost everything you pay for. As health care costs continue to skyrocket, fewer employers are able and willing to cover the cost of health insurance and more Americans are uninsured. Our approach to treating people is also becoming more expensive and toxic—and, sadly, not always that much more effective. Despite spending more than any other country on health care, overall health rankings do not put the United States among even the top 40 countries.

The good news is that health care reform is a hot topic of discussion in the current election. Whoever is elected, it is clear that changes will be made. By being informed, we can help to ensure that these changes are for the best.

As a physician, the causes of skyrocketing health care costs have been pretty obvious. In this article, we will discuss how we got into this mess. More importantly, we will discuss how to fix it. We can actually get much better care, and the freedom to choose what kind of care we want, for much less than we're paying now!

QUOTE/JOKE OF THE WEEK

This Modern World

Three women, two younger and one senior citizen, were sitting naked in a sauna. Suddenly there was a beeping sound. The young woman pressed her forearm and the beep stopped.

The others looked at her questioningly. "That was my pager," she said. "I have a microchip under the skin of my arm."

A few minutes later, a phone rang. The second young woman lifted her palm to her ear. When she finished, she explained, "That was my mobile phone. I have a microchip in my hand."

The older woman felt very low tech. Not to be outdone, she decided she had to do something just as impressive. She stepped outside of the sauna and went to the bathroom. She returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from her rear end. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at her. The older woman finally said... "Well, will you look at that... I'm getting a fax!!"
