Are People with CFS and Fibromyalgia Crazy?

Dear Readers,

Although the answer to this is "Of course not," and one can make the argument that those who believe that these illnesses are all in your mind are crazy (or at least stupid, cruel and/or ignorant), it is still a good idea to look at the mind-body issues involved with ALL illnesses. For example, depression and hostility have been associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and a "helpless/hopeless" personality with uterine cancer. Because some doctors have pushed the belief that CFS & FMS are all in your mind (they used to call Multiple Sclerosis "hysterical paralysis," so we're not alone in being abused by ignorant doctors), many of us have been afraid to look at "mind-body" issues in CFS/FMS.

A better approach is to ignore the unscientific idiots who say this is all in your mind, and allow yourself to treat both the physical and mind-body issues. I find that doing this is the best way to treat ALL illnesses, and CFS and Fibromyalgia are no exceptions. Let's explore the psychodynamic of CFS/FMS (hint—you're overachievers) so you can use this information to help yourself get well.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Last night, my sister and I were sitting in the den and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle to keep me alive. That would be no quality of life at all. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

So she got up, unplugged the computer and threw out my wine.
