NEWS UPDATE

FDA Approves Stevia

Good News! The FDA has finally approved Stevia for use as a sugar substitute.

After over a decade of economic special interests seeming to block the way (i.e., Nutrasweet), the FDA has finally approved the healthy herb Stevia as a natural sweetener to add to foods and sodas.

In fact, the first Stevia-sweetened soft drink, "Sprite Green" by Coca-Cola, is on its way to stores.

Pepsi said its first Stevia product, SoBe Lifewater, should hit store shelves next week, and Trop50, a Stevia-sweetened light orange juice product, is due out in January.

Dr. Pepper Snapple, the No. 3 soft drink company, said on Thursday it will market Stevia within a few weeks. Read more »

RESEARCH BRIEFS

We are entering the part of winter where crops are fallow, and most humans used to sleep 9-10 hours a day — till working in factories and offices, and becoming soccer moms, left us at 6 hours sleep a night. Let's look at a sampling of new research reminding us of the importance of sleep ;-)

Can More Sleep Help Fight Off Colds?

Poor sleep increases the risk of catching a cold. If an eight-hour sleeper loses as little as 10 minutes of sleep a night, they could be three and a half times more likely to get colds. If they lose as much as 40 minutes of sleep on an average night, they are over five times as likely to get a cold. Read more »

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3 year old girl, to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry.

The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3 year old what she thought about what she had just witnessed. Kathleen quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place... smack his bottom again!"

........

Our thanks to Kathi for this week's joke. Kathi wins a free bottle of Corvalen or the Energy Revitalization System vitamin powder;-) We invite you to send in your favorite jokes or quotes.
