Natural Healing for Osteoporosis

Dear Readers,

Two new studies suggest that osteoporosis medications (biphosphonates) can cause abnormal bone formation. This suggests that after five years of use, no further benefit is seen and that medication should be stopped for a while, or perhaps even long term. The good news? Natural alternatives are far more effective than the medications and can be used long term. They can even be taken with, or instead of, the medications.

In our upcoming newsletters, we will be discussing a number of promising treatments for CFS/Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and a number of other health issues. These include:

1. Low Dose Naltrexone

This old, safe and cheap medication has been found to have dramatic immune modulating effects, but only at super low doses. A recent case series by Dr. Sultana Mustafa that used this treatment at the Detroit Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Center confirmed a recent Stanford study showing it to be VERY helpful.

2. Curcumin

A new form of the herb Turmeric (curcumin) increases absorption 693%. A new herbal pain mix using this (in combination with Frankincense, Phenylalanine, nattokinase, and others) has been resulting in relief of hard to treat pains that bring the word “amazing” to mind. It's called "Curamin," and the feedback we’ve been getting from people whose chronic pain has gone away on this product is incredible. Other products using this new patented curcumin can be very helpful for asthma, colitis and a host of other problems.

2. New Product That Replaces Fish Oil

Tired of having to take a handful (or spoonsful) of fish oil? A new product won the award as one of the top 3 new natural products of 2009 (out of thousands of entries). One tablet a day replaces 7 to as much as 50 capsules of fish oil daily — making it a great alternative! We'll be talking about this soon, so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia (loss of bone density), here is natural help that is far more effective than medications. Read more »

XMRV Update

Though European studies have not shown XMRV to be present in repeated studies, this does not mean the case is closed. In the same way I encouraged caution when the report first came out (generating a large amount of angry mail in the blog world), I also now note that XMRV still warrants serious investigation and an open mind. When XMRV was first found in a subset of prostate cancer patients, the association was only found in American, and not European, studies. I simply recommend we give the research time to unfold. As I noted earlier, while doing the testing themselves, those repeating the WPI study should also send blinded blood samples to the WPI to see if their results match with those patients who have CFS versus those who are healthy, and also match with their independent findings.

The good news? This has begun, with a full blown Federal XMRV study involving 6 different centers, including the WPI.

This is discussed in an excellent blog by Cort Johnson, one of my favorite CFS reporters. Read more »

Meanwhile, for those following the action, another wonderful blog post also by Cort Johnson discusses new XMRV excitement in a Utah Lab. What I find interesting is the involvement of several researchers I also have a lot of respect for — Drs. Light & Light (a husband/wife team — watch for an upcoming newsletter report on their work) and Dr. Batemen. Read more »

Meanwhile, a Japanese study found XMRV in 1.7% of the general population and 6.3% of those with prostate cancer. My guess? The XMRV virus is more commonly seen in the U.S. than in Europe, and is one of many triggers in the CFS population. Read more »

QUOTE/JOKE OF THE WEEK

The Moped Race

An elderly man on a moped, looking about 100 years old, pulls up next to a doctor at a street light. The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, "What kind of car ya got there, sonny?"

The doctor replies, "A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!"

"That's a lot of money," says the old man. "Why does it cost so much?"

"Because this car can do 320 miles an hour!" states the doctor proudly.

The moped driver asks, "Mind if I take a look inside?"

"No problem," replies the doctor.

So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around.

Then, sitting back on his moped, the old man says, "That's a pretty nice car all right, but I"ll stick with my moped!"

Just then the light changes. So the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 160 mph.

Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be and WHOOOOSSSHHH! Something whips by him going even faster!

"What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?" the doctor asks himself. He presses harder on the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it's the old man on the moped!

Amazed that the moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas and passes the moped at 275 mph.

And he"s feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him AGAIN!

Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 320 mph. Not ten seconds later, he sees the moped bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and there"s nothing he can do!

Suddenly, the moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end.

The doctor stops and jumps out and unbelievably the old man is still alive.

He runs up to the banged-up old guy and says, "I'm a doctor. Is there anything I can do for you?"

The old man whispers, "Unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror!"
